Pronunciation <strong>and</strong> rhythm (speaking)<br />

Suitable <strong>for</strong> Young pupils <strong>and</strong> older pupils with low proficiency level.<br />

Resources Selection of picture or word cards familiar to pupils.<br />

Method<br />

Each pupil picks a card in turn.<br />

He/she sounds out the different parts of the word.<br />

He/she claps the beats in the word.<br />

Categories (picture/word recognition, speaking, learning vocabulary – categorising)<br />

Suitable <strong>for</strong> Young pupils <strong>and</strong> older pupils with low proficiency level.<br />

Resources Sets of cards (either pictures or words) belonging to a particular category. Each set<br />

contains an ‘odd one out’.<br />

Method<br />

Place one set of cards face down.<br />

Pupils work in teams of two or three. Taking turns the teams turn over a card.<br />

As each team turns over a card they say what it is <strong>and</strong> what category it belongs to (food, clothing,<br />

school, animals, etc.).<br />

The aim is to be the first to identify the ‘odd one out’ <strong>and</strong> say why it is different.<br />

Note! Use food cards to talk about healthy <strong>and</strong> unhealthy foods.<br />

I spy (listening, picture/word recognition)<br />

Suitable <strong>for</strong> Young pupils <strong>and</strong> older pupils with low proficiency level.<br />

Resources Any selection of picture or word cards familiar to pupils.<br />

Method<br />

Pupils work in pairs or small groups.<br />

Each pair/group has a selection of cards on the table, face up.<br />

Teacher says “I spy … something beginning with … “.<br />

Pupils find a picture/word that begins with that letter.<br />

Favourites (picture/word recognition, speaking, learning vocabulary)<br />

Suitable <strong>for</strong> Young pupils <strong>and</strong> older pupils with low proficiency level.<br />

Resources Sets of cards (either pictures or words) belonging to a particular category.<br />

Method<br />

Place one set of cards face down.<br />

Taking turns pupils turn over a card.<br />

As each pupil turns a card he/she says what it is, whether he/she likes or doesn’t like it <strong>and</strong> why.<br />

Repeat with another set of cards.<br />

Note! Ask older pupils to write about ‘My favourite meal’ or ‘My favourite clothes’, etc.
