Using stories 2 – <strong>for</strong> pupils learning to read<br />

Resources<br />

None.<br />

Method<br />

1. Pupils choose a story which they know <strong>and</strong> like.<br />

2. Pupils take turns to read aloud. Encourage correct intonation <strong>and</strong> pronunciation.<br />

3. If some words are difficult <strong>for</strong> the group to pronounce, use the approach in ‘Word stress 1’ above.<br />

Using stories 3 – <strong>for</strong> pupils who can read well<br />

Resources<br />

None.<br />

Method<br />

1. In pairs or small groups pupils choose a story that is familiar.<br />

2. Each pair/group works on retelling (or changing) the story in their own words. Encourage pupils to<br />

make notes.<br />

3. Each pair/group tells the story to the class, taking turns to be the narrator or adopting different roles.<br />

Using chants, rhymes, poems <strong>and</strong> songs<br />

1. For pupils not yet reading<br />

Rhymes <strong>and</strong> songs<br />

1. Use the approach outlined in ‘Using stories 1’.<br />

2. On finishing the activity ask pupils to think of more words that rhyme.<br />

Chants<br />

Create chants that are based on themes <strong>and</strong> have simple rhythms.<br />

E.g. To the rhythm of an accelerating train:<br />

Apple Apple<br />

Bread <strong>and</strong> butter Bread <strong>and</strong> butter<br />

Fish <strong>and</strong> chips <strong>and</strong> fish <strong>and</strong> chips<br />

Tea <strong>and</strong> toast <strong>and</strong> tea <strong>and</strong> toast <strong>and</strong> tea <strong>and</strong> toast<br />

Repeat very quickly ending with a train whistle.
