Purpose: To highlight important building connections and illustrate the proper<br />

use of various types of connection hardware.<br />

Key Issues<br />

n In high-wind regions, special hardware is used for most<br />

framing connections. Toe-nailing is not an acceptable<br />

method for resisting uplift loads in high-wind regions.<br />

Fill all nail holes with specied fasteners,<br />

unless reduced nailing is specied by design<br />

The length and diameter of the fasteners must be<br />

as specied by the manufacturer or engineer;<br />

some specications require non-standard nails<br />

Proper fasteners must be used with<br />

connection hardware.<br />

Offset bracket<br />

4.3: USE OF CONNECTORS AND BRACKETS<br />

Never rely on <strong>to</strong>e-nailing for uplift<br />

connections in high-wind areas<br />

n Hardware must be installed according <strong>to</strong> the manufacturer’s or engineer’s specifications.<br />

n The correct number of the specified fasteners (length and diameter) must be used with connection hardware.<br />

n Avoid cross-grain tension in connections.<br />

n Metal hardware must be adequately protected from corrosion (see NFIP Technical Bulletin 8-96).<br />

n Connections must provide a continuous load path (see Fact Sheet No. 4.1).<br />
