Capt. Gardner fettled down, Mr. Church ftep'd to him<br />

and feeing the blood run down his cheek, lifted up his<br />

Cap, and calling him by his Name; he look'd up in his<br />

Face, but fpoke not a Word, being Mortally Shot thro'<br />

the head; and obferving his Wound, Mr. Church found<br />

the ball entred his head on the fide that was next the Up-<br />

land, where the EnglifJi entred the Swamp. Upon which,<br />

having ordered fome care to be taken <strong>of</strong> the Captain, he<br />

difpatch'd information to the General that the beft and for-<br />

warder!: <strong>of</strong> his Army that hazarded their lives to enter the<br />

Fort, upon the muzzle <strong>of</strong> the Enemies Guns, were Shot in<br />

their backs, and kill'd by them that lay behind. Mr.<br />

Church with his fmall Company haften'd out <strong>of</strong> the Fort<br />

(that the Engli/Ji were now p<strong>of</strong>fefTed <strong>of</strong>) to get a Shot at<br />

the Indians that were in the Swamp, & kept firing upon<br />

them. He foon met with a broad bloody track, where the<br />

Enemy had fled with their Wounded men; following hard<br />

in the tra6t, he foon fpy'd one <strong>of</strong> the Enemy, who clap'd<br />

his Gun a-cr<strong>of</strong>s his breaft, made towards Mr. Church, and<br />

beckned to him with his hand; Mr. Church immediately<br />

commanded [15] no Man to hurt him, hoping by him to<br />

have gain'd fome intelligence <strong>of</strong> the Enemy, that might be<br />

<strong>of</strong> advantage; but it unhappily fell out that a Fellow that<br />

had lag'd behind coming up, fhot down the Indian, to Mr.<br />

Church's great grief and difappointment. But immedi-<br />

ately they heard a great fhout <strong>of</strong> the Enemy, which feem'd<br />
