INTRODUCTORY MEMOIR.<br />

[P. C. R. xi: 242], the Court ordered as follows: " Cap-<br />

taine Beniamen Church haueing; for and in the behalfe <strong>of</strong><br />

the Collonie, engaged to feuerall Indians; about fiue or<br />

six; That incase they did carry well they fhould abide in<br />

this Jurifdi6tion; and not fold to any fforraigne p r tes; ac-<br />

cordingly this Court doth confeirme the faid engagement<br />

and doth hereby tollarate theire fhay as aforfaid; notwith-<br />

ftanding any law <strong>of</strong> this Collonie to the contrary; except-<br />

ing; if any <strong>of</strong> them mould appeer to haue had a hand in<br />

any horred murder <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the Englifh p ticularly ex-<br />

cepting one Cr<strong>of</strong>fman; whoe is accufed to haue had a<br />

15 January, 167I, Capt. Church was commiffioned again<br />

by the Plymouth government, and went out again and<br />

[p. i8i,flo/Z] took "divers parties <strong>of</strong> Indians." 6 March<br />

[P. C. R. v: 225], the Plymouth Court granted leave to<br />

eight <strong>of</strong> Church's Indian foldiers to fettle at Saconet, he<br />

fupplying them with land, on condition that they hold<br />

themfelves ready for military fervice under him, " hee,<br />

fatisfying the Indians, to haue the whole prophett <strong>of</strong> fuch<br />

an adventure." 7 June \P. C. R. v: 234], he is author-<br />

ized to a6t as a magiftrate to iffue warrants, &c, at Saco-<br />

net and Pocajfet ; 13 July [Ibid. 242], he is recognized by<br />

the Court as agent <strong>of</strong> the widow <strong>of</strong> Daniel Haward, for<br />

the management <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> her late hufband; 30
