Philip, Tifpaquin, Tolq/bn, 282 &c. concluded that the Englifli<br />

would purfue them upon their Tracks, fo were way-<br />

laying their Tracks at the firft end <strong>of</strong> the Swamp, hoping<br />

thereby to gain a fhot upon Capt. Church who was now<br />

better imploy'd in taking his Prifoners & running them<br />

into a Valley, in form fomething fhap'd like a Punchbole,<br />

and appointing a guard <strong>of</strong> two files trible armed<br />

with Guns taken from the Enemy. But Philip having<br />

waited all this while in vain, now moves on after the reft<br />

<strong>of</strong> his company to fee what was become <strong>of</strong> them. And<br />

by this time Capt. Church was got into the Swamp ready<br />

to meet him; and as it happen'd made the firft difcovery,<br />

clapt behind a Tree until Philips company came pretty<br />

near, and then fired upon them, kilTd many <strong>of</strong> them, and a<br />

cl<strong>of</strong>e skirmifh followed. Upon this Philip having grounds<br />

fufiicient to fufpe6t the event <strong>of</strong> his com[4i]pany that<br />
