INTRODUCTORY MEMOIR.<br />

Benjamin was born at Plymouth in 1639, and was bred<br />

to his father's trade. No other circumftance <strong>of</strong> his early-<br />

life has found record. 26 Dec. 1667, — when at the age <strong>of</strong><br />

twenty feven or eight, -— he married Alice, fecond daugh-<br />

ter <strong>of</strong> Conftant and Elizabeth ( Collier ) Southworth, <strong>of</strong><br />

Duxbury; who was then not far from twenty-one, having<br />

been born in 1646. It is prefumed that their early married<br />

life was paffed in Duxbury, though it is probable that he<br />

was temporarily relident in various portions <strong>of</strong> the Colony,<br />

in the purfuit <strong>of</strong> his vocation. His firft appearance upon<br />

the Plymouth Colony Records is 25 Oct.. 1668, when [P.<br />

C. R. vii: 150] he is named as on a trial jury in the<br />

cafe <strong>of</strong> J<strong>of</strong>ias Winflow vs. Kenelm, and in that <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Doged.<br />

1 June, 1669, lefs than fix months after his father's death,<br />

the Court granted him " land att Taunton River " which<br />

William Pabodie had taken up and then furrendered, \P.<br />

C. R. v: 20] "for full fatisfa6tion for all the right his<br />

father, Richard Church, deceafed, hath to land in this<br />

Collonie."<br />

7 March 1670 \P. C. R. vii: 163], he was one <strong>of</strong> a petit<br />

jury at Plymouth for the trial <strong>of</strong> feveral actions. 29 May,<br />

his name appears upon the lift <strong>of</strong><br />

Sarah, wife <strong>of</strong> James Burroughs, <strong>of</strong> publifhed lift <strong>of</strong> Richard's children which<br />

Briftol, tailor, as his filter, though no I have feen. [iV. E. Hiji. and Gen.<br />

fuch name appears upon the fulleft Reg. xi : 154.]<br />
