PREFATORY NOTE.<br />

itself now becoming rare, was published fifty-six years<br />

after at Newport, R.I., in 1772, by Solomon Southwick,<br />

in small 8vo, pp. 199. It is made clear from the Diary*<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rev. Ezra Stiles, D.D., (then Pastor <strong>of</strong> the Second<br />

Congregational Church in Newport), that he aided<br />

Southwick, and really edited the volume.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following extracts bear upon the subject; viz,<br />

" 1771. Dec. 18. Correcting the press for Col. Church's<br />

Hist, <strong>of</strong> K. <strong>Philip's</strong> <strong>War</strong> in 1675.<br />

" 1771. Dec. 19 Reviewing Col. Benj. Church's History <strong>of</strong><br />

adding English<br />

K. <strong>Philip's</strong> <strong>War</strong>, 1676, at the request <strong>of</strong> the printer ; —<br />

or present Names <strong>of</strong> places written in Indian names in the Original.<br />

Mr. Southwick is printing a Second Edition ; first Edit. 171S [iSzV].<br />

" i77 2 - Apr. 9 Finished writing the Life <strong>of</strong> Col. Benja-<br />

min Church, to be affixed to the new Edition <strong>of</strong> his History <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Indian war, called K. <strong>Philip's</strong> <strong>War</strong>, now printing. He was born 1639,<br />

and died at Little Compton, Janry. 171^, ^Et. 78.<br />

" 1772. Apr. 10 Inspecting the Press."<br />

Dr. Stiles appended to the volume, also, an " Ode<br />

Heroica," which \N. E. Hist, and Gen. Reg--, xi. 155] was<br />

composed by Benjamin Church <strong>of</strong> Boston, "Vendue-<br />

master," son <strong>of</strong> the old Colonel's son Edward, who was<br />

also a " Vendue-master," — as that age styled the useful<br />

person whom we call an Auctioneer, — and was father <strong>of</strong><br />

Dr. Benjamin, <strong>of</strong> sad Tory memory. He not only glori-<br />
