1151.05.06 <strong>Rubber</strong> <strong>Modified</strong> <strong>Asphalt</strong> and <strong>Rubber</strong>ized <strong>Asphalt</strong> Cement<br />

1151.05.06.01 General<br />

Materials for the RMA shall conform to OPSS 313 except as amended by this special provision. It is the<br />

Contractor’s responsibility to identify a facility to produce the mixes in accordance with the supplier’s<br />

instructions for the use <strong>of</strong> their materials. The Contractor is responsible for obtaining from the suppliers any and<br />

all information required for the proper preparation, handling, storage and use <strong>of</strong> their materials.<br />

The Contractor shall be solely responsible for obtaining materials, producing mixes, transportation, storage and<br />

use <strong>of</strong> all materials. The Contractor shall assure that the RMA is produced to prevent any deleterious effects to<br />

the finished product. The Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring cross contamination does not occur<br />

between the sections.<br />

The Contractor shall contact Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), at either <strong>of</strong> the contact information below, who<br />

will facilitate the sourcing <strong>of</strong> the field blending plant, needed for producing Superpave 9.5 R-Gap Graded. The<br />

field blending plant shall only be sourced through OTS. The Contractor shall be responsible for the cost <strong>of</strong><br />

supplying and operating the field blending plant. The Contractor shall allocate sufficient space at the hot mix<br />

asphalt plant to house the field blending plant. An area <strong>of</strong> about 30 m x 20 m would be sufficient for the field<br />

blending plant. The Contractor shall provide points <strong>of</strong> contact for supply lines from and to the field blending<br />

plant. The Contractor shall cooperate with the operator <strong>of</strong> the field blending plant and harmonize the operation <strong>of</strong><br />

the field blending plant with the hot mix asphalt plant in order to produce the RMA mix meeting the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the Contract Documents. The Contractor shall be responsible to supply and feed the CR into the<br />

field blending plant.<br />

The CR shall be processed from whole passenger vehicle tires. Heavy equipment tires shall not be used. Use <strong>of</strong><br />

uncured or devulcanized rubber will not be permitted. CR shall be in the form <strong>of</strong> ambient or cryogenic ground<br />

rubber, or both. The CR shall be produced in Ontario from tires scrapped in Ontario. CR shall not contain more<br />

than 0.01% <strong>of</strong> wire and 0.05% fabric by weight. CR shall be free <strong>of</strong> other contaminants. The CR shall be dry and<br />

free-flowing and not produce foaming when blended with the PGAC. The CR shall have a specific gravity in the<br />

range <strong>of</strong> 1.1 to 1.2, as determined according to ASTM D 297.<br />

The CR shall meet the gradation requirements specified in Table R3 determined according to ASTM D5644. No<br />

particles shall exceed a length <strong>of</strong> 5 mm as measured on any axis.<br />

The Contractor shall contact Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), at the above contact information, who will<br />

facilitate the sourcing <strong>of</strong> the CR.<br />
