CHAPTER XXXV<br />

MOABAD LEARNS THAT VIS AND RAMIN ARE TOGETHER<br />

WHEN the sovereign Shah Moabad returned victorious <strong>and</strong><br />

joyful from his campaign as he wished so had been the<br />

event he came home to Khuarasan, <strong>and</strong> entered the city<br />

of Marav. He had won both the l<strong>and</strong> of Ran 1 <strong>and</strong><br />

Somkhit'h, 2 <strong>and</strong> had taken hostages <strong>and</strong> tribute from<br />

Ceisar, King of the Greeks; 3 he was victorious over all<br />

monarchs, he had overcome his enemies. His pomp <strong>and</strong><br />

triumph 4 reached even unto heaven in his rejoicing, <strong>and</strong><br />

the earth had no room for the multitude of his warriors.<br />

"When he |<br />

his stun", 5 it made a heap<br />

higher than a mountain ; so to say, it reached the sky in its<br />

loftiness. He had captured the ball 6 from the monarchs<br />

warriors from every l<strong>and</strong> at his gate, <strong>and</strong> hostages, too. He<br />

was become sovereign of all sovereigns, <strong>and</strong> none knew an-<br />

other equal to him on the earth.<br />

When he went thus joyous <strong>and</strong> victorious to the city of<br />

Marav, his joy was turned to grief. From Zarnages he heard<br />

his heart was filled with blood, <strong>and</strong><br />

the news about <strong>Ramin</strong> ;<br />

his brain boiled with smoke from the excess of his heart.<br />
