I to 2 inches in length, glossy-smooth, except for weak wrinkles near<br />

the suture. Color pattern variable; sometimes with axial, wavy, brown lines<br />

and with 4 spiral rows of arrow-shaped or squarish brown spots. Umbilicus<br />

and its large round, internal callus white. Exterior of hard operculum with<br />

about 10 spiral grooves. Uncommon in eastern Florida; common in the West<br />

Indies.<br />

Southeast Florida, Caribbean and Bermuda.<br />

% inch in length, glossy-smooth, exterior lead-gray with vague, spiral,<br />

darker-gray bands. Aperture and columella brown; callus which almost fills<br />

the umbilicus characteristically dark to light chocolate-brown. Moderately<br />

common on intertidal sand flats. Do not confuse with Folinices duplicatus,<br />

which is much flatter and has a corneous operculum, but which also has a<br />

brown to purplish brown callus.<br />

Arctic Ocean to North Carolina. Arctic Ocean to off southern Cali-<br />

fornia.<br />

I to I % inches, in length, fairly thin, smooth, yellow-white, with a<br />

smooth, gray to yellowish-brown periostracum. Umbilicus sealed over by a<br />

small, flat callus. Operculum, calcareous, thin, slightly concave, smooth,<br />

white and paucispiral. Commonly dredged in moderately deep water, and<br />

occasionally found intertidal north of Massachusetts. The sand-collar eggcase<br />

has smooth edges, and has a pimpled surface caused by the small com-<br />

partments of young.<br />
