Bands such as Blur, Oasis and the Happy Mondays all played here before they hit the big time. LATE & LIVELY The Parlour (Elmwood Avenue, tel: 028 9068 6970) In any city the bars and clubs close to the university are usually a safe bet if you are looking for a bit of craic. The Parlour bar is a case in point as it’s situated a stone’s throw from Queen’s. It’s busy most nights of the week and has several fl oors. THIS MONTH SHOP For fresh food and arts and crafts make your way to St George’s Market. The old Victorian market is packed full of interesting stalls and lots of local character every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. SEE Irish icon Christy Moore has released over 30 albums over a career spanning 40 years. He will perform with Declan Sinnott on 20–21 November at Waterfront Hall. GO Head to Queen’s Quarter for a stroll around this elegant part of town. It’s chock full of great old buildings and leafy boulevards, as well as the Botanic Gardens. ESCAPE If you are heading to the northwest from Belfast why not stop off at the bustling town of Magherafelt. Around 40 minutes from Belfast, it boasts loads of great shops and restaurants. NO WAY! The British Museum owes much to Sir Hans Sloane, born in Killyleagh, County Down. He began collecting plants and birds’ eggs on the shores of Strangford Lough and his accumulation grew into a priceless collection that formed the nucleus of the British Museum.
