WINTER
WONDERLAND
WITH CHARMING RESORTS, THRILLING
ACTIVITIES AND A BREATHTAKING MOUNTAIN
BACKDROP, THE LAKE GENEVA REGION
HAS YOUR WINTER HOLIDAY SORTED
THE SWISS ALPS are an adventure
playground par excellence, hosting a
range of sports and fun activities across
225km of slopes that give panoramic
views across the region’s awesome
landscape. Downhill and cross-country
skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding
are among visitors’ favourites, as well
as tobogganing, skating and curling.
Glacier 3000, the highest peak in
the Les Diablerets area, has slopes
and a snow park open from October
to May. Whether you’re travelling on
foot, in a snow bus or with a dog sled,
it’s a stunning destination. The whole
family will love the 7km tobogganing
track in Les Diablerets, which is open
every day and several nights a week.
Chic Villars has panoramic views of the
Alps and Rhone Valley. In winter, the
100km of slopes in the Villars-Gryon-
Les Diablerets and Glacier 3000 area
mean you can leave and return without
taking your skis off. For the non-skier,
there’s an ice rink, winter walking, cog
railway and sports centre.
Over in Leysin, a revolving restaurant
offers breathtaking views of the
surrounding mountains — at an
altitude of over 2,000m, it’s powered
by solar energy. Less relaxed, but more
exciting, the Tobogganing Park lets you
whizz down special tracks on infl ated
air tubes. For the brave, an impressive
jump has been built this year.
This wonderful winter region also
plays host to various festivals and
events. The International Hot-Air
Balloon Festival, in Château-d’Oex,
(21-29 January 2012) welcomes over
100 hot air balloons from around
the world. In February and March,
the Villars Night Show runs a
stunning sound and light extravaganza
on the snow, with fi reworks, sporting
feats, laser shows and performances
by artists.
The alpine resorts of the Lake
Geneva Region are also close to
Lausanne, Montreux-Riviera and
Yverdon-les-Bains, where traditional
Christmas markets showcase regional
wares and high-quality handicrafts.
