Marie-Noëlle Bauer meets the new generation of
Parisian creatives causing a stir by bypassing the
mainstream art world and bringing gallery
events directly into people’s homes

best known for its sprawling fl ea market, the commune of
Saint-Ouen to the north of Paris had previously failed to make
a splash on the cultural map. That is, until this particular night
when it welcomed one of the most intriguing happenings to
have inveigled its way into the French arts calendar: Les Expos
à La Maison, or Exhibitions at Your House.
Inspired by graffi ti’s migration from the street to galleries
and museums, the organisers (a local creative collective called
FROM PARIS) are taking the opposite tack of marking art more
accessible by coaxing it out of its institutional frame. For the
past year they’ve been encouraging ordinary people to become
art patrons by allowing an artist to show work in their homes,
then inviting their friends to enjoy the ephemeral exhibition.
We’re greeted at the door by this evening’s temporary art
patron, Ben Magnien, a 29-year-old graphic designer who
shares his airy fl at with two housemates. At fi rst it feels like
your average French house party, with hip young things fl irting
and chatting in the kitchen area or smoking with gusto on the

pas vraiment se vanter d’actualité culturelle jusqu’à
accueillir ce soir là l’événement artistique le plus
intriguant de l’année : les Expos à la maison.
Inspirés de la migration des graffi tis de la rue aux
galeries et aux musées, les organisateurs, un collectif
créatif local baptisé FROM PARIS, prend le chemin
inverse en sortant l’art de son cadre institutionnel pour
le rendre plus accessible. Ils invitent les quidams à
brièvement devenir mécènes en permettant à un artiste
d’exposer son travail chez eux et en invitant leurs amis à
cette exposition éphémère.
À la porte, nous sommes accueillis par l’hôte
temporaire de ce soir, Ben Magnien, un graphiste de
29 ans qui partage son grand appartement avec deux
colocataires. On se croirait dans n’importe quelle soirée
française, avec ses jeunes branchées en discussion
