HIKING IN
SLOVENIA
AND ON
THE AZORES
Next up, hiking. For this, we chose two completely different
regions. Our first destination was the Julian Alps in Slovenia.
The Triglav National Park is a fantastically beautiful area and
a great place for all kinds of outdoor sports. The steep lime -
stone mountains covered in lush green forests and with karst
zones higher up near the summits are an enticing prospect
for the hiker who enjoys a bit of variety, while down in the
valleys the river water has such an intense turquoise hue that
you might be tempted to think it must be artificially dyed. In
the Soca Valley you meet cyclists and mountain bikers, while
the River Soca attracts kayakers and rafters from countries
around the world with whitewaters of every grade of difficulty.
In one day alone we met people of twenty different na tion -
alities here.
It was in Slovenia that we were able to put our new TEXAPORE
AIR clothing (pages 68, 71, 88 and 89) through its paces. These
amazing fabrics are not only waterproof and highly breath -
able but air permeable, too. The fabric is engineered like a filter:
it allows air to pass through but keeps the rain out. The more
you move, the more effective the ventilation process. We
call it “dynamic breathability”. This revolutionary new fabric
technology represents a quantum leap in wear comfort for
weatherproof shell clothing. It REMOVES THE RAIN and
RETAINS THE AIR!
The second hiking trip took us way out west into the Atlantic,
to the Azores – the weather kitchen of Europe. These islands
form a landscape of extreme contrasts, from partially sub -
tropical to barren and volcanic. The weather changes con -
stantly; it is generally pleasantly warm but on occasion windy
and cool. The plan here was to go for some shorter, high
intensity hikes to test out our hiking and new ACTIVE TRAIL
products.
This catalogue marks the launch of our new ACTIVE TRAIL
product line. These products were developed specifically for
high intensity activities like trail running, mountain biking and
fast & light hiking. The line focuses on lowest possible weight,
highest breathability ratings and intelligent moisture manage -
ment. This is where you will find our new, highly breathable
fabrics, Stormlock O 2 and Flexshield Softshell (pages 118 - 121)
and, from the footwear team, a completely new line of ACTIVE
TRAIL shoes (pages 254 - 259) with two innovative new sole
concepts.
