Man JIole.—A hole to admit a man within the boiler.<br />
Mud Hole.—A small opening at bottom of water space<br />
around nrc-box,'to clear out depositcs of dirt, <strong>and</strong> other<br />
matter introduced with the water.<br />
;?.—Any substance used to make a joint steam at<br />
water tight. . .<br />
Pet Cock.—-A small cock between the chock valve <strong>and</strong><br />
pump, to see if the latter is working.<br />
I'intal,—rAn upright pin. .'There, is a pintal secured<br />
beneath the forward end of the engine,- to connect it with<br />
the truck frame, <strong>and</strong> to allow of the turning of the track,<br />
independent of the engine.<br />
Pinion.—'See Cylinder,<br />
Piston i?oc?.^-Rod secured at one end within the bodyof<br />
the piston, <strong>and</strong> at the other to the cross head. This rod<br />
jasscs through the cylinder cover, <strong>and</strong> is made steam tight<br />
by packing secured in a necking, or recess, outside of<br />
cover, <strong>and</strong> called a stuffing-bos.<br />
Plug, Fusible.—A lea.J piug tapped in, top sheet of<br />
furnace, to melt <strong>and</strong> £ho ivamiiig whs" the water fails<br />

Plunger.—The solid piston of a pump, <strong>and</strong> pressing only<br />
by one end against the water.<br />
Ports.— Openings, or passages.<br />
Priming.—The passage of water, along witli the steam,<br />
into the cylinders, when the engine is working.<br />
Mocker Shaft.--A shaft rocking in its bearings.<br />
Heversiiig Lever.—K lever in reach of the enginemari,<br />
acting upon the valve motion, <strong>and</strong> to change tlie direction<br />
of the progross of the engine. •<br />
Safely Valve.^A valve on the boiler, to discharge tha<br />
eurplus steam generated, above what is required for the<br />
engine, <strong>and</strong> which by accumulating would, endanger the<br />
safety of the machine.<br />

' Smoke-box.—A chamber at forward end of boiler, where<br />
the smoke <strong>and</strong> sparks from the tubes are received <strong>and</strong> discharged<br />
through the- sparker.<br />
Sparker, or Chimney.—A pipe to discharge tlio smoke<br />
<strong>and</strong> waste steam, <strong>and</strong> surrounded by a casing to retain tha<br />
sparks. . • •<br />
Springs.—-These are required over each wheel to reduce<br />
shocks <strong>and</strong> jolts...<br />
Steam C7iest.~-I5ox on top, or side of cylinder,- <strong>and</strong> containing<br />
the valve to admit steam on the piston.<br />
Steam Pipe.—Pipe entering the : dome, <strong>and</strong> communicating<br />
with the steam chests through two branch steam<br />
pipes in the smoke-box. , '<br />
Stuffing-box.—Sue Piston Rod.—Used in all situations<br />
where a rod or spindle, having any end motion, requires<br />
