1839 Golden Spike joining the rails ceremonies*<br />

There were three photographers present at the ceremonies on<br />

May ic, 1869. Alfred. A. Bart;, official photographer of the Ceatral<br />

<strong>Pacific</strong> Railroad, with his studio at Sacrajaeato, had made the trip<br />

to Promontory Sunanit to photograph the ceremonies. Andrew J. Bussell<br />

had cose from New York for the saisa purpose as the official photo&r&her<br />

of the tjaioa <strong>Pacific</strong> Railroad. Charlea H. Savage of th© firm of<br />

Savage <strong>and</strong> Ottiager, Salt Lake City> was an independent photographer<br />

present. These three men tooX all the known pictures of the ceremonies,<br />

soiae of which have been reproduced many times in various "books <strong>and</strong><br />

publications, as well as in thous<strong>and</strong>s ofstereoptic view sets of the<br />

tiase <strong>and</strong> later. Often the picturea have been incorrectly attributed<br />

to one of the three photographers present vhen in fact, thegr were<br />

taken by another. Beeeat studies have sho^n that the best views<br />

taJtezt "by AniSrev J. Suasell, but reproductions of perhaps the most<br />

widely used have been wrongly attributed ta Savage.<br />

Several of the best views of Jupiter were takea "by Hart on the<br />

day before the ceremonies, when th© Staaiord party was killing time<br />

in going baeis to Monument Point aad aight-seeiag along the right-of-<br />

way <strong>and</strong> oa the shore of Sale l&ke.<br />

A few picturea of Jupiter wre taken later, almost hy accident<br />
