This shows a general decrease in loss with melting time. The OH absorption band at 2.5<br />

µm was removed with fluorination, and scattering significantly reduced in the 10 hour<br />

8.3. Discussion<br />

8.3.1. Stress in a proposed core / clad pair<br />

Different thermal expansion coefficients are inevitable in a core / clad pair, therefore,<br />

stresses will be generated in the resulting fibre. Table (8.7) summarises some thermal and<br />

mechanical properties for a possible core / clad optical fibre pair [9].
