Well known and appreciated for her work in the Baroque repertoire, the Canadian soprano
Karina Gauvin is equally at ease in the music of Bach, Mahler, Britten, and the repertoire of the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries. She sings with today’s leading orchestras – the Orchestre
Symphonique de Montréal, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic – as well as such Baroque ensembles as the Akademie
für Alte Musik Berlin, Les Talens Lyriques, Les Violons du Roy, the Venice Baroque Orchestra,
Accademia Bizantina, and Il Complesso Barocco. In the opera house and the concert hall she has
appeared under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, Charles Dutoit, Kent Nagano, Semyon
Bychkov, Roger Norrington, Alan Curtis, Bernard Labadie, and Christophe Rousset. In recital,
she works with the pianists Marc-André Hamelin, Michael McMahon, and Roger Vignoles. She
has made well-received recordings of several Handel operas with Alan Curtis and Il Complesso
Barocco for Deutsche Grammophon: Tolomeo, Alcina, and Ezio. In 2009 she was nominated at the
Grammy Awards for the second time for her recording of Lully’s Psyché. Her most recent release
on CD is Britten’s Les Illuminations with Les Violons du Roy. Among her recent engagements are
a concert performance of L’Enfant et les sortilèges with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the St John Passion at Carnegie Hall with Bernard Labadie and Les
Violons du Roy, and Le Martyre de saint Sébastien with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
and Michael Tilson Thomas. In the opera house, she will shortly be heard as Vitellia in Mozart’s La
clemenza di Tito at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (director: Denis Podalydès), then in the title
role of Gluck’s Armide (director: Barrie Kosky) at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, and as
Armida in Handel’s Rinaldo (director: Robert Carsen) at the Glyndebourne Festival.
