My job is predominantly a deskbound position; however I maintain nursing and<br />

midwifery annual practising certificates and I periodically work ‘on the floor’ in addition<br />

to responding to staffing shortages and obstetric emergencies from my office. As a result<br />

of these experiences, I was drawn to research this phenomenon, in recognition that<br />

midwifery coordinators carry significant clinical, leadership and managerial<br />

responsibility within a climate of staffing shortages, a declining midwifery workforce and<br />

legislative differentiation between the provision of primary and secondary midwifery care<br />

to women in my workplace.<br />
