Clinical Standards and Guidelines<br />
The goal <strong>of</strong> a TOT is to improve<br />
Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills (KAS)<br />
to meet the needs for health care<br />
provision. Thus, clinical training should<br />
be based on clinical standards and<br />
guidelines.<br />
The importance <strong>of</strong> developing clinical<br />
standards and guidelines is in:<br />
N Making training relevant to the<br />
current clinical situation;<br />
N Making the training consistent<br />
with the national standards and<br />
guidelines;<br />
N Providing a basis, or standard, for<br />
training evaluation and follow up;<br />
and<br />
N Providing a basis for choosing and<br />
strengthening a site for clinical<br />
practicum.<br />

Discussion (15 min):<br />
UNIT 2/OBJECTIVE #2<br />
The trainer should:<br />
N Ask Px if they know what clinical<br />
standards and guidelines are.<br />
N Ask if anyone has used them or if<br />
anyone has ever helped develop them.<br />
N Ask Px to discuss their familiarity and<br />
experience with clinical standards and<br />
guidelines.<br />
N Ask about what should be contained<br />
in clinical standards and guidelines<br />
and why they are important.<br />
N Record the answers on a flipchart and<br />
supplement their answers with the<br />
content on the left side <strong>of</strong> the page.<br />
Group Work (30 min.):<br />
N Divide Px into 4 groups and give each<br />
group a copy <strong>of</strong> a clinical standard<br />
guideline to discuss. Px Handouts 2.3:<br />
Combined Oral Contraceptives, 2.4:<br />
Care <strong>of</strong> the Healthy Newborn, 2.5:<br />
Intrauterine Contraceptive Device, and<br />
2.6: Care <strong>of</strong> the Mother and Newborn<br />
the First Day After Delivery.<br />
N Ask them to answer the following<br />
