When possible, the test should be<br />

pilot tested before it is used in regular<br />

training programs. After the test has been<br />

administered to 1 or 2 groups <strong>of</strong> Px, the<br />

designer needs to analyze and improve it.<br />

The weaknesses that are revealed should<br />

be corrected and the test continually<br />

revised.<br />

Administering a Knowledge-Based<br />

Assessment<br />

It is important for the trainer to maximize<br />

the test-taking performance <strong>of</strong> each<br />

Px being tested. If the administrative<br />

procedures for one group are changed<br />

slightly from those used with another<br />

group, neither group may obtain its<br />

maximum performance. Standard<br />

procedures become very important when<br />

comparisons are made among training<br />

groups.<br />

<strong>Trainers</strong> should prepare themselves before<br />

testing by following these suggestions:<br />

N Review the test procedures;<br />

N Make certain that the testing room is<br />

ready;<br />

N Make sure that supplies for the test are<br />

adequate;<br />

N Make arrangements so those Px being<br />

tested will not be interrupted;<br />

N Refrain from any special coaching<br />

on the subject matter <strong>of</strong> the test in<br />

an attempt to reduce anxiety and<br />

frustration;<br />

N Rehearse by reading the directions; and<br />

Discussion (30 min.):<br />

The trainer should:<br />

N Start the lecture by asking Px to<br />

describe how they prepare themselves<br />

before administering a knowledgebased<br />

assessment (test). Complete the<br />

discussion with information found in<br />

the content.<br />

N Ask Px what factors can affect<br />

test administration. Complete the<br />

discussion with information found in<br />

the content.<br />

N Discuss how to standardize procedures<br />

when administering tests.<br />

N Ask for questions.<br />
