Specific Objective #7: Describe how to develop a clinical training site.<br />

CONTENT: METhOdOlOgy:<br />

Proper preparation <strong>of</strong> a training site for<br />

clinical training is essential to ensure<br />

optimal conditions for training and<br />

transferring knowledge and skills to Px.<br />

The steps to be taken in the process <strong>of</strong><br />

preparing a site are listed briefly below.<br />

Steps in Developing a Clinical<br />

<strong>Training</strong> Site<br />

1. Discuss the process that will be<br />

needed to prepare the site for a clinic<br />

practicum with the clinic staff.<br />

N Select an appropriate team to make<br />

the site assessment.<br />

N The purpose <strong>of</strong> the assessment will<br />

be to determine what needs to be<br />

done to prepare the site for a clinical<br />

practicum.<br />

N Brief the assessment team on what you<br />

plan to do.<br />

N Discuss the steps in the performance<br />

analysis.<br />

2. Decide what you will need at the<br />

facility to make it a practicum site (all<br />

<strong>of</strong> the things listed in the previous<br />

objective).<br />

N Patient mix and volume<br />

N Equipment, supplies, and drugs<br />

N Supportive staff<br />

N Protocols and correct procedures<br />

Group work: (30 min.):<br />

The trainer should:<br />

N Ask Px to brainstorm the steps to<br />

follow when preparing a clinical site<br />

for training activities.<br />

N Write the Px’ responses on a flip chart<br />

as they brainstorm.<br />

N Complete the steps with any that are<br />

missing.<br />

Distribute Px Handout 3.16: Steps in<br />

Developing a Clinical <strong>Training</strong> Site and<br />

give Px 5 minutes to read.<br />

N Review the answers and give Px a<br />

chance to ask questions.<br />

N Summarize by saying that developing<br />

the clinical training site will enhance<br />

the quality <strong>of</strong> the training activity and<br />

make it more likely that the Px will<br />

transfer newly acquired knowledge,<br />

skills, and attitudes in their place <strong>of</strong><br />

work.<br />

N <strong>Trainers</strong> should identify activities<br />

(written on a flipchart).<br />

N Ask Px to match them with steps in<br />

selecting a clinical training site.<br />
