'The woman stood for her leading of the song.'
In (540), n#an is followed by a phrase headed by the general possessive classifier an,
which indicates that the complement of n#an is not a CP or an AgrSP. This sort of phrase
may not follow in (541). But if the possessive classifier is excluded, the sentence is
grammatical with either n#an or in.
(542) Kōrā eo e-ar jutak n#an tōl al eo.
woman the.s 3s.agr-T(past) stand in.order.to lead.trans song the.s
'The woman stood in order to lead the song.'
(543) Kōrā eo e-ar jutak in tōl al eo.
woman the.s 3s.agr-T(past) stand IN lead.trans song the.s
'The woman stood to lead the song.'
In order to account for the facts concerning n#an, two analyses might be proposed. First it
might be argued that n#an may be followed by either a phrase headed by the possessive
classifier (544a) or one of a different grammatical category, possibly TP or VP (544b).
(544) a. [AgrSP kōrā eo ear jutak [CP n#an [TP/VP tōl al eo]]]
b. [AgrSP kōrā eo ear jutak [PP n#an [XP an tōl al eo]]]
One major difference between these two structures is that, (544a) is a biclausal structure,
with n#an as the head of CP, while (544b) is a monoclausal structure. Alternatively, it
might be the case that n#an is always followed by the same type of phrase and that this
phrase may be headed by either a possessive classifier or a null head (545):
(545) a. [AgrSP kōrā eo ear jutak n#an [XP Ø tōl al eo]]]
b. [AgrSP kōrā eo ear jutak n#an [XP an tōl al eo]]]
