While the great bulk of Pennsylvania Germans were Lutherans or<br />

Reformed, a small but <strong>in</strong>fluential group of Moravians, or United Brethren, a<br />

pacifist pietist sect, came to Pennsylvania <strong>in</strong> the 1740s. Found<strong>in</strong>g such towns<br />

as Bethlehem and Nazareth, the Moravians furnished many missionaries to<br />

the Indians, as well as virtually <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g choral music and establish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

numerous schools and ladies' sem<strong>in</strong>aries <strong>in</strong> Pennsylvania.<br />

The mid-eighteenth century, <strong>in</strong>deed, saw a considerable expansion of<br />

higher education <strong>in</strong> America. The Southern gentlemen had William and Mary<br />

College, the liberal Puritans had Harvard, and the rigidly orthodox, Yale.<br />

Now several <strong>in</strong>fluential new colleges were founded <strong>in</strong> the colonies. The Presbyterians<br />

founded the College of New Jersey (now Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton) <strong>in</strong> 1746.<br />

Although Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton was founded by English and ma<strong>in</strong>land Scots rather than<br />

by Ulstermen, the college provided the <strong>in</strong>dispensable source for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g new<br />

m<strong>in</strong>isters for the Scotch-Irish and for educat<strong>in</strong>g their lead<strong>in</strong>g citizens. In Philadelphia,<br />

the Reverend William Smith and Benjam<strong>in</strong> Frankl<strong>in</strong> organized<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1755 a new liberal nonse
