Indian children ingeneral, lead more sheltered lives. Discussions on sex, contraception,<br />
boyfriends, girlfriends, family violence, etc. are rare. It is hoped that children will learn<br />
by example rather than through discourse. It is for this reason that they be exposed to<br />
broader issues, moral, social and political, as well as be given instruction on<br />
interpersonal behaviours, coping skills, co=unication skills, etc. to enable them to<br />
manage successfully on leaving the sheltered domain <strong>of</strong> school and family.<br />
(2) Reco=endations<br />
The reco=endations are :<br />

that the psycho-social screening <strong>of</strong> would-be parents, should be a part<br />
<strong>of</strong> the service provided by private doctors, who if they have reason to<br />
suspect that abuse might occur, should liaise with the welfare authorities,<br />
or co=unity health nurses;<br />
that there should be a pre and post-natal education for parents. Such<br />
programmes should be implemented in ante-natal classes, or can be<br />
made available in leaflet form to be handed to every mother ante-natally<br />
and post-natally, at hospitals, surgeries and baby clinics;<br />
that psycho-education, that is, the teaching <strong>of</strong>social science information,<br />
be included as part <strong>of</strong> the school curriculum;<br />
that a human relations programme be implemented in schools. This<br />
programme covers aspects relating to interpersonal relations,<br />
co=unication, family life, values and moral education;<br />
that teachers be encouraged to attend workshops on child abuse;<br />
that a programme to meet the varied needs <strong>of</strong> children should be part<br />
<strong>of</strong> every school curriculum, and can go a long way towards breaking the
