Literacy Development<br />

The development <strong>of</strong> literacy skills during the preschool period sets the stage f<strong>or</strong><br />

subsequent literacy-based abilities. Because children from families facing socio-<br />

economic hardship live in environments <strong>of</strong>fering less supp<strong>or</strong>t f<strong>or</strong> language and literacy<br />

development (Britto, 2001) and demonstrate literacy skills below national averages (Zill<br />

& Resnick, 2006), literacy intervention development in this population is <strong>of</strong> great<br />

educational concern. The imp<strong>or</strong>tance <strong>of</strong> literacy development during the preschool years,<br />

then particularly f<strong>or</strong> children facing socio-economic hardship, will be discussed. The role<br />

<strong>of</strong> preschool teachers in facilitating early literacy skills will then be discussed, followed<br />

finally by a brief review <strong>of</strong> a previously implemented literacy intervention program that<br />

will be used in the current intervention.<br />

Literacy Development During the Preschool Years: Why is literacy development so<br />

imp<strong>or</strong>tant?<br />

Literacy skills acquired during the preschool period serve as the foundation f<strong>or</strong><br />

children‘s subsequent reading abilities. Much previous research has demonstrated links<br />

between early literacy skills acquisition and children‘s reading and writing abilities<br />

throughout the early elementary years. Acc<strong>or</strong>ding to Beard (2003), fluency,<br />

comprehension, and phonics, in particular, have been emphasized in previous research.<br />
