Participant Recruitment<br />

Head Start teachers and children were recruited f<strong>or</strong> participation in the research.<br />

The lead researcher talked to Head Start teachers during programming hours (i.e., during<br />

teaching preparation on Fridays f<strong>or</strong> half-day teachers and bef<strong>or</strong>e class and during nap<br />

time f<strong>or</strong> full-day teachers). At the time that teachers were recruited f<strong>or</strong> the study, they<br />

completed an inf<strong>or</strong>med consent document (see Appendix B) and a brief demographic<br />

questionnaire, and the lead researcher provided them a copy <strong>of</strong> the document f<strong>or</strong> their<br />

own rec<strong>or</strong>ds.<br />

With the consent <strong>of</strong> each classroom‘s teachers, a number <strong>of</strong> means <strong>of</strong> recruiting<br />

children were employed, including attending parent meetings, talking to parents during<br />

programming hours, posting inf<strong>or</strong>mational flyers on ‗parent inf<strong>or</strong>mation boards‘ in Head<br />

Start classrooms, and sending research paperw<strong>or</strong>k home weekly in children‘s classroom<br />

folders until desired participant numbers were reached. Teachers were also asked to talk<br />

and pass and collect consent f<strong>or</strong>ms to parents as they picked up and dropped <strong>of</strong>f their<br />

children. Each classroom was provided a large envelope including a list <strong>of</strong> all children<br />

eligible f<strong>or</strong> participation in that classroom. Teachers were instructed to return parents‘<br />

research paperw<strong>or</strong>k to the envelope upon receipt. On Friday <strong>of</strong> every week during the<br />

participant recruitment phase, the lead researcher collected research paperw<strong>or</strong>k from the<br />

envelope. At this time, the lead researcher also placed additional copies <strong>of</strong> research<br />

paperw<strong>or</strong>k into folders <strong>of</strong> eligible children whose parents had not yet returned the<br />

paperw<strong>or</strong>k.<br />
