At the time that children were recruited f<strong>or</strong> the study, parents completed research<br />

paperw<strong>or</strong>k, including an inf<strong>or</strong>med consent document (see Appendix C), a parent<br />

questionnaire accompanying Denham‘s (1986) Affect Knowledge Test (AKT; see<br />

Appendix D; see description in next section), and a brief demographic questionnaire<br />

obtaining inf<strong>or</strong>mation about the child (i.e., birth date, gender, child care and early<br />

childhood education hist<strong>or</strong>y, race and ethnicity, and languages spoken) and the child‘s<br />

family (i.e., mothers‘ and fathers‘ education, number <strong>of</strong> adults present in the child‘s<br />

home, annual household income, and languages spoken in the home). At that time,<br />

parents were also provided a copy <strong>of</strong> the inf<strong>or</strong>med consent document f<strong>or</strong> their own<br />

rec<strong>or</strong>ds.<br />

Children whose parents submitted fully completed research paperw<strong>or</strong>k were<br />

included in the study. Phone numbers were obtained f<strong>or</strong> families who returned<br />

incomplete research paperw<strong>or</strong>k (but had consented to their children‘s participation) from<br />

Head Start staff early in the participant recruitment phase. Whenever possible, the lead<br />

researcher contacted families by phone and talked to parents during pick-up and drop-<strong>of</strong>f<br />

times and special events (e.g., parent-teacher conferences) to obtain any inf<strong>or</strong>mation<br />

omitted from returned research paperw<strong>or</strong>k. In <strong>or</strong>der to assign each classroom a maximum<br />

<strong>of</strong> two reading groups including 5 children each, a maximum <strong>of</strong> 10 children returning<br />

completed research paperw<strong>or</strong>k from each classroom were included in the study. In the<br />

event that m<strong>or</strong>e than 10 children per classroom returned completed paperw<strong>or</strong>k, the first<br />

10 <strong>of</strong> these children were included in the study. The <strong>or</strong>der in which completed paperw<strong>or</strong>k<br />

was received determined participant identification assignments f<strong>or</strong> data collection<br />
