Rocky Mountain SER Head Start classrooms.<br />

Overall, mean child age was 58.85 months (SD = 3.51, range = 52.53-68.83;<br />

approximately 4.90 years <strong>of</strong> age). Mean age f<strong>or</strong> children participating in classrooms<br />

assigned to the intervention group was 59.00 months (SD = 3.83, range = 52.77-68.83;<br />

approximately 4.91 years <strong>of</strong> age), and mean age f<strong>or</strong> children participating in classrooms<br />

assigned to the book reading control group was 58.73 months (SD = 3.27, range = 52.53-<br />

64.40; approximately 4.90 years <strong>of</strong> age). Complete categ<strong>or</strong>ical demographic data f<strong>or</strong> all<br />

participating children and f<strong>or</strong> children assigned to each experimental group (intervention<br />

group n = 49, book reading control group n = 65) are presented in Table 3; demographic<br />

findings f<strong>or</strong> categ<strong>or</strong>ies with the largest percentages <strong>of</strong> children are summarized here. The<br />

sample consisted <strong>of</strong> 66 (57.9%) boys and 48 (42.1%) girls; and a vast maj<strong>or</strong>ity <strong>of</strong><br />

children were Hispanic (85.1%; 7.9% Caucasian, 7% African American). Regarding<br />

family income, 38.3% earned $10,000 <strong>or</strong> less annually, 29.0% earned between $10,000-<br />

19,000 annually, and 18.7% earned between $20,000-29,000 annually. Over one third <strong>of</strong><br />

children‘s mothers (37.7%) had rep<strong>or</strong>tedly earned a high school degree <strong>or</strong> equivalent, and<br />

an additional 21.9% had not earned a high school degree <strong>or</strong> equivalent. Nearly half<br />

(43.%) <strong>of</strong> children‘s fathers were not present in their homes, 28% had rep<strong>or</strong>tedly earned a<br />

high school degree <strong>or</strong> equivalent, and an additional 18.4% had not earned a high school<br />

degree <strong>or</strong> equivalent. As determined by parent rep<strong>or</strong>t on the demographic questionnaire,<br />

most children fluently spoke only English (94.7%), and 5.3% <strong>of</strong> children fluently spoke<br />

both English and Spanish.<br />
