This map clearly reflects the organizational structure of the Belgian perinatal care. Due
to the P* functions, the care for high-risk mothers and baby’s is centred on referral
MIC-services, mainly situated in big cities ( province’s capitals). Women in the northern
part of the province of ‘Antwerpen’ and ‘Limburg’ and in the southern part of ‘West-
Vlaanderen’ travel around 40 km to a MIC-service.
As seen in figure 9, the Southern part of Belgium is also quite ‘red’, the mean distance
travelled to a MIC-service by women living in the province of ‘Hainaut’, and Namur’ is
40 km. The distance travelled by women living in Province ‘Luxembourg’ varies from 40
to 160 km.
B. Mode of deliveries
Table 18 shows the detailed distribution of deliveries between the two types of
maternities.
