244 Luke II. 32.<br />

over <strong>the</strong> whole human race. In <strong>the</strong> light of this plain asserti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, we may judge of <strong>the</strong> former passages in which such expectati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

were set forth. <strong>The</strong>ir seeming limitati<strong>on</strong> to Israel, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir reference to earthly relati<strong>on</strong>s, form but <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e aspect of <strong>the</strong><br />

idea of <strong>the</strong> Messiah, which we must complete by <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, even<br />

where it is not expressly menti<strong>on</strong>ed. <strong>The</strong> Messiah's most immediate<br />

relati<strong>on</strong> is certainly to Israel, but <strong>the</strong>nce <strong>the</strong> vivifying influence of<br />

his Spirit extends to all nati<strong>on</strong>s ; and though his agency commences<br />

in <strong>the</strong> depth of <strong>the</strong> soul, yet it <strong>the</strong>nce influences ex-<br />

• ternal relati<strong>on</strong>s also ; so that, in <strong>the</strong> most proper sense, <strong>the</strong> human<br />

race, as such, in all its members, and in aU its external and internal<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>s, is <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>on</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Messiah exercises his saving<br />

and sanctifying power. As this relati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Messiah's work<br />

to <strong>the</strong> entire human race, even to <strong>the</strong> most distant nati<strong>on</strong>s, is just<br />

<strong>the</strong> doctrine of <strong>the</strong> Old <strong>Testament</strong> also (see Gen. xii. 3 ; xviii. 18 ;<br />

xxviii. 14 ; xlix. 10 ; Psalm Ixxxvii.; Isa. xi., xix., xlii., and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

passages), we are <strong>the</strong> more obliged to presupj)Ose this correct view<br />

in <strong>the</strong> pious at <strong>the</strong> time of Christ, in that <strong>the</strong>y appear as living in <strong>the</strong><br />

spirit of <strong>the</strong> Old <strong>Testament</strong>. That its c<strong>on</strong>nexi<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>, however, and <strong>the</strong>ir deliverance from b<strong>on</strong>dage to <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n,<br />

should occupy <strong>the</strong> foreground with <strong>the</strong>m, is perfectly accounted for by<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir circumstances. <strong>The</strong> same form of representing <strong>the</strong> subject is<br />

sancti<strong>on</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Old <strong>Testament</strong>, which never permits <strong>the</strong> Mes-<br />

siah's relati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong> to degenerate into bigoted exclusiveness,<br />

nor its hopes of external good to be without a moral and<br />

religious foundati<strong>on</strong>. But <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary was <strong>the</strong> case with <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

cepti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> gross and sensual multitude, who rejoiced in excluding<br />

aU hea<strong>the</strong>n, as such, from <strong>the</strong> blessings of <strong>the</strong> Messiah, and who,<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir carnal dispositi<strong>on</strong>s, and without true change of heart,<br />

hoped to be allowed at <strong>on</strong>ce to follow <strong>the</strong> Messianic King, as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

general, to a war of exterminati<strong>on</strong> against <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n. That such<br />

gross c<strong>on</strong>cepti<strong>on</strong>s are not to be c<strong>on</strong>founded with <strong>the</strong> noble views<br />

which were preserved in <strong>the</strong> circles of <strong>the</strong> pious at that time, is<br />

shewn by ver. 38, where those who waited for redempti<strong>on</strong> are<br />

spoken of as a special class. But <strong>the</strong> expectati<strong>on</strong>s of a Messiah<br />

were, as already intimated, a comm<strong>on</strong> property of <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong> at <strong>the</strong><br />

time of Christ ; if, <strong>the</strong>refore, those which were current am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

multitude were acknowledged as <strong>the</strong> true <strong>on</strong>es, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> waiting for<br />

redempti<strong>on</strong> could not have been used as characteristic of a certain<br />

class of men. (In verse 30, as in i. 71, <strong>the</strong> abstract is put for <strong>the</strong><br />
