questi<strong>on</strong> as to eternal life, being <strong>the</strong> final object of all <strong>the</strong>ological<br />

enquiry, is put f<strong>on</strong>vard by <strong>the</strong> lawyer, under <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong> that,<br />

in replying to it, Jesus must bring out whatever was peculiar in his<br />

opini<strong>on</strong>s. (<strong>The</strong> formula KXr^pov<strong>on</strong>elv ^(jjrjv aluviov, or fiaaiXeiav rov<br />

Qeov [1 Cor. vi. 9, 10; xv. 50] has without doubt, its foundati<strong>on</strong> in<br />

<strong>the</strong> comparis<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> land of Canaan as a sensible type of eternity,<br />

and of rest in it, with eternal life. <strong>The</strong> expressi<strong>on</strong> K?.rjpovoiiuv rfiv<br />

yT]v at Matth. v. 5, refers to this.) <strong>The</strong> Saviour, however, refers<br />

him to <strong>the</strong> old well-known word of God, saying, as it were, what<br />

thou askest has lain from of old expressed in <strong>the</strong> revealed word ;<br />

take it <strong>the</strong>nce for yourself. <strong>The</strong> lawyer now brings forward most<br />

correctly <strong>the</strong> passages of Deut. vi. 5, in c<strong>on</strong>nexi<strong>on</strong> with Numb. xix.<br />

18 (which passages are in a similar way c<strong>on</strong>joined by anothc' law-<br />

yer at Mark xii. 33), hence it <strong>on</strong>ly remained for him to translate<br />

into living act <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tents of <strong>the</strong>se deep words, which, rightly<br />

understood, involve <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>New</strong> <strong>Testament</strong>. That this had not<br />

as yet been d<strong>on</strong>e by him, <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>versati<strong>on</strong> shews.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r, a remarkable feature in <strong>the</strong> citati<strong>on</strong>s of this passage, both<br />

here and elsewhere in <strong>the</strong> Gospels, is <strong>the</strong>ir deviati<strong>on</strong> alike from <strong>the</strong><br />

Hebrew text and from <strong>the</strong> LXX. In Hebrew <strong>the</strong>re stand <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

pressi<strong>on</strong>s 3=V, tirs, iNtt. <strong>The</strong> LXX. translate <strong>the</strong>se, duivoia^ '4>'^XVy<br />

dvva^tg. In <strong>the</strong> quotati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> evangelists, however, <strong>the</strong> words<br />

run thus :<br />
