<strong>the</strong>y furnish ano<strong>the</strong>r argument for <strong>the</strong> independence of <strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

text. <strong>The</strong> phrase dnb KaTaQoXTJg Koofiov^ in <strong>the</strong> sense of arr' dpx7]g,<br />

does not <strong>on</strong>ce occur in <strong>the</strong> Old <strong>Testament</strong> ; in <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Testament</strong>,<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary, it is very comm<strong>on</strong>, Matth. xxv. 34 ; Luke xi. 50 ;<br />

John xvii. 24, and often besides. At <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> of it lies that<br />

figure which compares <strong>the</strong> world to a building whose erecti<strong>on</strong> commences<br />

with <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> (KarafSoXi]). Only in this passage, how-<br />

ever, do we find <strong>the</strong> verb epetJyw, which <strong>the</strong> LXX. also employ at Ps.<br />

xviii. 2, in translating ?"^3?|7, and which is very comm<strong>on</strong>ly used by <strong>the</strong><br />

Gnostics to express <strong>the</strong>ir emanati<strong>on</strong>-doctrine of <strong>the</strong> streaming forth<br />
