<strong>the</strong> man who believed in him, for he experienced <strong>the</strong> saving power<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Lord in his heart.' But we must allow, that thoughts like<br />

those of <strong>the</strong> Pharisees might have occurred to a mind, not indeed<br />

decidedly irreligious, but more pr<strong>on</strong>e to speculati<strong>on</strong> ; for faith in <strong>the</strong><br />

revelati<strong>on</strong> of Grod in Christ is something very great. Such genuine<br />

doubt, or, ra<strong>the</strong>r, such an uncertainty, would have cxliibited itself<br />

very differently from what it did in <strong>the</strong> Pharisees ; in <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong><br />

Saviour sharply reproves such thoughts, as sinful. <strong>The</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> was<br />

probably <strong>the</strong> following :—<strong>The</strong> c<strong>on</strong>spicuous majesty of Jesus, which<br />

was reflected purely in childlike minds, reached <strong>the</strong>ir hearts also ;<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y opposed <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong>se sacred impressi<strong>on</strong>s, from <strong>the</strong><br />

feehng that, if <strong>the</strong>y gave entrance to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y must renounce altoge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir principles and <strong>the</strong>ir practices. Standing thus in inward<br />

oppositi<strong>on</strong> to God, <strong>the</strong>y were glad to make use of circumstances,<br />

which might be perplexing even to sincere minds, as a welcome<br />

means of enabling <strong>the</strong>m to justify <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>on</strong>duct in <strong>the</strong>ir own eyes.<br />
