BUS 5426 ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE ECONOMICS (3 credits).<br />

Introduces the behavioral sources <strong>of</strong> environmental problems. Includes property<br />

rights, externalities, cost-benefit analysis, depletable and recyclable resources, pollution<br />

control, population growth, sustainable development, ecotourism and environmental<br />

justice.<br />

BUS 5431 MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Focuses on internal<br />

reporting to managers for use in planning and control, in making nonroutine decisions<br />

and in formulating major plans and policies. Covers cost-volume-pr<strong>of</strong>it relationships,<br />

flexible budgets and standards, job order and process cost, and cost allocation and<br />

accumulation.<br />

BUS 5432 ADVANCED ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Provides the accounting<br />

major with intensive exposure to the subject <strong>of</strong> accounting for business combinations<br />

in a format designed to further the student’s ability to solve complex accounting<br />

problems involving worksheet techniques. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5433 ADVANCED PROBLEMS AND CURRENT TOPICS (3 credits).<br />

Broadly exposes the accounting major to advanced subjects in accounting; furthers the<br />

student’s ability to analyze and present solutions to complex accounting problems, as<br />

well as interpret and apply theoretical issues; and develops the student’s communication<br />

and presentation skills. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5434 ADVANCED AUDITING THEORY AND APPLICATION (3 credits).<br />

Exposes the accounting major to the theory <strong>of</strong> auditing and development <strong>of</strong> audit programs;<br />

procedures for obtaining audit evidence; and auditor responsibilities under Securities and<br />

Exchange Commission requirements. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5435 TAX AND FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING RESEARCH (3 credits).<br />

Examines the various primary and secondary authorities available for answering<br />

questions in the area <strong>of</strong> tax and financial reporting. The main purpose is not to teach<br />

the respective rules in the areas <strong>of</strong> tax and financial reporting, but to teach students<br />

how to find authoritative answers to problems in these areas. (Requirement: Instructor<br />

approval.)<br />

BUS 5436 GOVERNMENTAL AND NONPROFIT ACCOUNTING (3 credits).<br />

Principles and procedures <strong>of</strong> accounting, financial reporting and budgeting for governmental<br />

and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it entities. Includes general funds and special revenue funds, capital<br />

project funds, enterprise funds, fiduciary funds, and accounting for colleges and universities,<br />

healthcare entities and voluntary health and welfare organizations. (Requirement:<br />

Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5437 INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDITING/CONTROL (3 credits).<br />

Process <strong>of</strong> obtaining and evaluating internal audit evidence and communicating audit<br />

results. Includes method to assess organizational risks, controls and performance, and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional auditing standards and auditors’ ethical responsibilities. (Requirement:<br />

Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5438 FRAUD EXAMINATION (3 credits). Overviews the nature <strong>of</strong> fraud<br />

(asset misappropriation, corruption and fraudulent statements), how it is committed<br />

and how it can be detected, investigated and prevented.<br />

BUS 5439 FORENSIC ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Provides exposure to the<br />

investigation <strong>of</strong> accounting procedures and techniques used in litigation support.<br />

Includes financial reporting fraud, forensic accounting techniques, income reconstruction<br />

methods, testifying as an expert witness, evidence management, cybercrime and<br />

business valuations.<br />

BUS 5440 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Studies the concepts and<br />

tools <strong>of</strong> corporate financial management and financial planning, including capital<br />

budgeting, capital structure and net working capital. Considers the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

ethics in financial decision-making.<br />

BUS 5444 FINANCE MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS (3 credits).<br />

Presents an analysis <strong>of</strong> financial institutions and the interrelationships among<br />

intermediaries in both money and capital markets. Considers the functions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Federal Reserve and its effect on interest rates and financial markets. Focuses on<br />

commercial banks and other depository institutions, investment banks and mutual<br />

funds. Prerequisites: BUS 5421, BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5446 INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Investigates the<br />

concepts, theories and techniques underlying the development <strong>of</strong> investment policies<br />

and strategies.<br />

BUS 5447 ENTREPRENEURIAL FINANCE (3 credits). Explores both the<br />

capital structure and financial needs <strong>of</strong> a start-up company. In addition, students gain<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> intellectual property, as well as the techniques used to value<br />

nonpublicly traded companies. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5448 PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS (3 credits). Focuses on understanding<br />

the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> combining financial assets into portfolios. Examines the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> sector selection in asset allocation. Investigates the diversification <strong>of</strong><br />

portfolios. Prerequisites: BUS 5446.<br />

BUS 5450 ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Presents existing<br />

research, theories and models explaining how individual and group behavior and<br />

processes shape the internal dynamics <strong>of</strong> organizations. Provides the foundation to<br />

understand contemporary debates concerning alternative organizational designs and<br />

management practices.<br />

BUS 5455 PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Surveys personnel management<br />

practices and procedures, including wage and salary considerations, employee<br />

benefits and incentives, and labor-management relations. Emphasizes the individual<br />

within the organization and the development <strong>of</strong> the human resource.<br />

BUS 5456 EMPLOYMENT LAW (3 credits). Examines federal regulations<br />

governing the relationship between employees and employers, and emphasizes their<br />

respective rights and responsibilities. Includes discrimination, sexual harassment,<br />

affirmative action, privacy, terminating employees, compensation and benefit regulations,<br />

family leave, and safety and health.<br />

BUS 5457 NEGOTIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION (3 credits).<br />

Examines the management <strong>of</strong> conflict in organizations at the level <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

and the group. Provides a background in alternatives to litigation models including<br />

negotiation, mediation, peer-review systems and arbitration. Uses simulation exercises<br />

to develop the student’s skills in applying various forms <strong>of</strong> dispute resolution.<br />

BUS 5458 LEADERSHIP THEORY AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Teaches the leadership process and techniques used to train leaders by<br />

reading the literature, analyzing cases <strong>of</strong> corporate leadership and participation in<br />

experiential exercises that are used in leadership training. Also reinforces leadership<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> interpersonal interaction, written analysis and oral presentation. Prerequisites:<br />

BUS 5450.<br />

BUS 5460 MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (3 credits). Addresses<br />

policy and management issues surrounding information systems in today’s enterprises:<br />

strategic use, organizational impact, project management, human resource issues and<br />

other topics germane to understanding management information systems.<br />

BUS 5461 PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (3 credits).<br />

Covers the translation <strong>of</strong> product and service requirements into facilities, procedures<br />

and operating organizations. Includes product design, production alternatives, facilities<br />

location and layout, resource requirements planning, quality control and project<br />

management. Uses live case analyses.<br />

BUS 5462 INFORMATION SECURITY (3 credits). Covers information security<br />

techniques from a managerial perspective. Includes network and host security,<br />

cryptography, authentication, security policies, intrusion detection and forensics,<br />

and related managerial responsibilities. Prepares the student for the Center for<br />

Immigration and National Security (CINCS) Level-1 examination.<br />

BUS 5465 MANAGING INFORMATION (3 credits). Explores how organizations<br />

gather, represent, process and distribute information and knowledge to employees and<br />

customers. Includes knowledge management, knowledge workers productivity, data<br />

and process modeling and data mining. Examines major issues relating to information<br />

processing and its management at the individual, group, and organizational levels.<br />

BUS 5466 MANAGING SYSTEMS (3 credits). Provides a foundation <strong>of</strong> critical<br />

issues in the design and implementation <strong>of</strong> business and information systems change.<br />

Focuses on the interdependence <strong>of</strong> information technologies and organizational characteristics<br />

by examining managing business redesign, IT leadership, managing projects<br />

and changes, and managing enterprise information systems.<br />

BUS 5467 MANAGING ELECTRONIC COMMERCE (3 credits). Examines<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> electronic commerce from business to consumer, business to business and<br />

intra-organizational perspectives to reflect the Internet and global communications<br />

networks that have emerged as powerful strategic assets, providing increased opportunity<br />

and uncertainty for business leaders.<br />

BUS 5470 MARKETING MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Examines the tools and<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> managing marketing activities as well as an analysis <strong>of</strong> the marketing<br />

process. Emphasizes decision-making, the refinement <strong>of</strong> skills needed to recognize and<br />

solve marketing problems, and effective communication <strong>of</strong> recommendations. Uses<br />

case analysis extensively.<br />

BUS 5476 STRATEGIC MARKETING (3 credits). Includes strategic analysis <strong>of</strong> a<br />

firm’s activities from the marketer’s point <strong>of</strong> view. Gives attention to marketing strategy<br />

formulation, implementation and control. Assesses strategies for the functional areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> marketing (product, pricing, distribution and promotion) and their relevant application<br />

to e-commerce. Prerequisites: BUS 5470.<br />

BUS 5480 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT (3 credits). In-depth analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

industries and competitors, and how to build and defend competitive advantages in<br />

forming a successful competitive strategy. Case analysis and management simulation<br />

convey the multifunctional nature <strong>of</strong> decision making at the top management<br />

level. Augmented by live-case analyses. Must be taken in the final semester prior to<br />

graduation.<br />

BUS 5486 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (3 credits). Emphasizes economic,<br />

social, cultural, legal and environmental influences on the formulation and execution<br />

<strong>of</strong> the business policy <strong>of</strong> firms engaged in multinational business. Students explore<br />

the functions, problems and decision-making processes <strong>of</strong> multinational business<br />

organizations. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />
