EDS 5135 READING IN THE CONTENT AREA (3 credits). Students develop<br />

strategies for designing lessons that will lead middle and high school students to<br />

become active readers, engaged in the process <strong>of</strong> learning with textbooks as well as<br />

supplemental materials. Explores how to create active learning environments in which<br />

students know how, when and why to use all modes <strong>of</strong> language to learn.<br />

EDS 5203 THEORIES AND TRENDS IN EDUCATION (3 credits). Provides<br />

an overview <strong>of</strong> human development and learning. Topics include behavioral, social<br />

and cognitive learning theories. Emphasizes the application and implications <strong>of</strong> these<br />

theories to educational practice. Includes student review <strong>of</strong> research articles and other<br />

publications that relate to human development and learning theories.<br />

EDS 5226 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS IN EDUCATION (3 credits).<br />

Introductory review <strong>of</strong> various uses for microcomputers in schools. Includes a review<br />

<strong>of</strong> current hardware available, computer application s<strong>of</strong>tware, use <strong>of</strong> the World Wide<br />

Web, computer assisted instruction s<strong>of</strong>tware, networking and legal/ethical issues.<br />

EDS 5227 EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE EVALUATION AND DESIGN<br />

(3 credits). Proper design and appropriate evaluation <strong>of</strong> education s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Students write programs using established design techniques and procedures.<br />

Covers crash-pro<strong>of</strong>ing programs, user help menu methods, documentation<br />

techniques and screen formatting.<br />

EDS 5250 CASE STUDY: SCIENCE EDUCATION (1-6 credits). Involves<br />

an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a specific issue or topic in science education. Allows a student<br />

with a special interest in science education to pursue guided study in that area.<br />

(Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

EDS 5270 INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATION (3 credits). Introduces the<br />

theory, practice, organization and research <strong>of</strong> informal science education. Includes<br />

classroom sessions, sessions in various science education venues and presentations by<br />

and discussions with informal science educators.<br />

EDS 5272 INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATION INTERNSHIP (3 credits).<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 120 hours working at a host informal science education venue.<br />

Requires formal written and oral presentations. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

EDS 5274 INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATION PROJECT (3 credits).<br />

Planning, design and implementation <strong>of</strong> an informal science education project.<br />

Introduces and overviews the field <strong>of</strong> environmental education. Includes an overview<br />

<strong>of</strong> the history and definition <strong>of</strong> EE, models <strong>of</strong> environmental literacy and behavior, and<br />

published needs assessments and status reports. Concludes with an analysis <strong>of</strong> current<br />

needs/problems and opportunities in <strong>Florida</strong>.<br />

EDS 5420 METHODS IN ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE<br />

CONTENT (3 credits). Focuses on concepts in ecology and environmental science,<br />

and principles for teaching and learning concepts. Introduces students to models for<br />

teaching/learning concepts and generating lessons using selected models. Concludes<br />

with an analysis <strong>of</strong> educational materials.<br />

EDS 5430 METHODS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND ISSUE<br />

INVESTIGATION (3 credits). Focuses on skills for analyzing, investigating and<br />

evaluating environmental problems and issues. Students practice these skills and apply<br />

them in an investigation on a selected problem/issue. Other topics include skill-based<br />

teaching strategies and emphasis on these skills in programs and print materials.<br />

EDS 5440 METHODS FOR CITIZENSHIP AND ENVIRONMENTAL<br />

RESPONSIBILITY (3 credits). Emphasizes rationales and strategies for teaching<br />

citizenship and environmental responsibility. Explores these topics from various perspectives,<br />

and develops and applies skills in these areas. Reviews pertinent guidelines<br />

and strategies in social studies, science and environmental education.<br />

EDS 5450 CASE STUDY: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (1-6 credits).<br />

Involves an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a specific issue or topic in environmental education.<br />

Allows a student with a special interest in environmental education to pursue guided<br />

EDS 5999 THESIS (3-6 credits). Individual research work under the direction <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Investigation <strong>of</strong> relevant research in science, mathematics, environmental or computer<br />

EDS 6010 RESEARCH PRACTICUM (3 credits). Creation <strong>of</strong> a pilot study in<br />

preparation for the doctoral dissertation. (Requirement: Must be taken in the same<br />

semester in which comprehensive examinations are administered.)<br />

EDS 6070 STATISTICS FOR EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH (3 credits).<br />

Includes multiple regression/correlation methods, multivariate techniques and computer<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> educational data. Prerequisites: EDS 5070, EDS 5095.<br />

EDS 6071 STATISTICS FOR EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 2 (3 credits).<br />

Examines contemporary statistical strategies for analyzing data in applied educational<br />

settings. Includes causal/path analysis and structural equation modeling, discriminant<br />

analysis, logistic regression, random coefficient regression for clustered data, and<br />

longitudinal regression. Prerequisites: EDS 6070.<br />

EDS 6095 RESEARCH-SCIENCE EDUCATION (1-6 credits). Research under<br />

the guidance <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the science education faculty in a selected area <strong>of</strong> science<br />

education.<br />

EDS 6899 FINAL SEMESTER DISSERTATION (0-2 credits). Variable<br />

registration for dissertation completion after satisfaction <strong>of</strong> minimum registration<br />

Introduces the concepts that aid in understanding both aggregate economic<br />

conditions and the policy alternatives designed to stabilize national economies.<br />

Includes the determination <strong>of</strong> GDP and national income, inflation, unemployment,<br />

monetary policy, economic growth and exchange rates. (SS) (Requirement: Must be<br />

enrolled in <strong>Florida</strong> Tech University Online.) Prerequisites: MTH 1000 or MTH 1001<br />

EEC 2304 INTRODUCTION TO MICROECONOMICS (3 credits). Introduces<br />

the neoclassical theory <strong>of</strong> price determination. Includes supply and demand analysis,<br />

production and cost theory, market structures, externalities and public goods, factor<br />

payments, income distribution and informational asymmetries. (SS) (Requirement:<br />

Must be enrolled in <strong>Florida</strong> Tech University Online.) Prerequisites: MTH 1000 or<br />

EGN 1000 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (3 credits). Introduces<br />

engineering problem solving and pr<strong>of</strong>essional aspects and ethics <strong>of</strong> engineering with<br />

lectures, lab demonstrations and field trips. Includes productive uses for microcomputers<br />

and spreadsheets. Also introduces the fields <strong>of</strong> science and engineering taught<br />

at <strong>Florida</strong> Tech.
