PSF 4551 PRINCIPLES OF INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY<br />
ADVOCACY (3 credits). Explores the response to crime by law enforcement, the<br />
court system, social services and victim advocates. Primarily focuses on advocacy<br />
for individuals and the community. Examines domestic violence, crime prevention,<br />
delinquency, hate crimes and substance abuse in terms <strong>of</strong> best practices from the<br />
field. (Requirement: Junior standing.) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />
PSF 4562 FORENSIC CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews<br />
forensic clinical psychology, including forensic interviewing and assessment <strong>of</strong> children<br />
and adults, treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fenders and victims, legal procedures involving the<br />
interaction <strong>of</strong> clinical psychologists with the justice system, and expert testimony by<br />
mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. (Requirement: Junior standing.) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />
PSF 4591 CRITICAL ISSUES IN FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits).<br />
Examines contemporary and critical issues in forensic psychology that are central to<br />
theoretical and applied areas <strong>of</strong> the field, such as racial pr<strong>of</strong>iling, sex crimes, jury consulting,<br />
correctional psychology, kinesics and advanced interviewing, international<br />
crime and terrorism. Prerequisites: PSF 3551.<br />
PSF 4791 CRITICAL ISSUES IN CHILD ADVOCACY (3 credits). Covers<br />
the history, comparative perspectives and legal framework as apply to the responses<br />
to child maltreatment. Addresses the necessary skills needed to work as a child<br />
advocate. Also includes other issues pertaining to child maltreatment. (Requirement:<br />
Junior standing.) Prerequisites: PSY 3531.<br />

PSY 1400 FRESHMAN SEMINAR (1 credit). Offers discussions by members<br />
<strong>of</strong> the faculty about various areas <strong>of</strong> research in and practice <strong>of</strong> psychology to give<br />
freshmen an overview <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> the field and the people in it. (Requirement:<br />
Must be enrolled in the School <strong>of</strong> Psychology.)<br />
PSY 1411 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews<br />
psychological processes, including both areas in which psychology is a natural science<br />
(physiological psychology, sensation and perception, basic learning and cognition)<br />
and a social science (motivation, human development, personality, social interaction,<br />
psychopathology and psychotherapy). (SS)<br />
PSY 1461 PSYCHOLOGY OF ADJUSTMENT AND PERSONAL GROWTH<br />
(3 credits). Examines the relevance <strong>of</strong> psychological understanding in personal and<br />
interpersonal situations, including definitions and discussions <strong>of</strong> human adjustment<br />
factors, such as anxiety, stress, coping mechanisms and psychological adaptation. (SS)<br />
PSY 1462 SUBSTANCE ABUSE (3 credits). Examines experimental evidence<br />
on the physical, physiological and psychological effects <strong>of</strong> drug use and conclusions<br />
relating to the real vs. alleged effects <strong>of</strong> drugs. (SS)<br />
PSY 1463 HUMAN SEXUALITY (3 credits). Integrates and presents biological,<br />
psychosocial and cultural aspects <strong>of</strong> human sexuality within the context <strong>of</strong> the most<br />
recent research findings. (SS)<br />
PSY 2000 LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT AND PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits).<br />
Surveys the various psychological, biological and other interdisciplinary areas<br />
<strong>of</strong> human development. Also covers changes over the entire human life span.<br />

PSY 2413 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (1 credit). Offers research experience<br />
under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the psychology faculty, generally in the context<br />
<strong>of</strong> programmatic research teams. May be repeated for a maximum <strong>of</strong> three credits.<br />

PSY 2442 ADULT DEVELOPMENT AND AGING (3 credits). Introduces<br />
current information and psychological research on aspects <strong>of</strong> adult development,<br />
old age and aging. Examines the intellectual, motivational, psychobiological, social,<br />
performance and personality changes that occur in adulthood and old age. (SS)<br />

PSY 2444 CROSS-CULTURAL AND ETHNIC PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits).<br />
Examines the relationship between cultural variables and psychological processes<br />
from both a psychological and an anthropological perspective. Addresses cultural,<br />
international and ethnic issues. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />
PSY 2445 PSYCHOLOGY OF WOMEN (3 credits). Examines the way gender<br />
differences affect the lives <strong>of</strong> women. Studies biological, cultural and social factors in<br />
terms <strong>of</strong> their direct effects on women, and in terms <strong>of</strong> the psychological and cultural<br />
bases <strong>of</strong> prejudice and discrimination. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />
PSY 2446 SPORT PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Surveys the theory, research and<br />
applications <strong>of</strong> psychology pertaining to exercise and sports. Presents current topics<br />

PSY 2512 PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH METHODS AND STATISTICS 1<br />
(4 credits). Introduces foundational concepts in quantitative behavioral research<br />
methods, including theory building, reliability, validity, sampling and ethics. Covers<br />
measurement and descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, elementary inferential<br />
statistics and computer data analysis. Prerequisites: CSE 1301, MTH 1000 or<br />

socialization, productivity, decision making and leadership. Emphasizes the application<br />

group situations. Includes cult and crowd phenomena, social loafing, group therapy,<br />

PSY 3423 PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Studies the biological<br />
bases <strong>of</strong> human behavior, including in-depth treatment <strong>of</strong> nervous system anatomy and<br />
physiology, and the biological concepts underlying emotion, motivation, learning and<br />
memory. Prerequisites: BIO 1020 or EDS 1022 or EDS 1032, PSY 1411.<br />
PSY 3425 HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Examines the scientific interrelationships<br />
among the biological, cultural, environmental and psychological factors<br />
involved in physical health and the prevention <strong>of</strong> illness. (Requirement: Third-year<br />

PSY 3441 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Surveys the areas <strong>of</strong> social<br />
psychology as it has evolved in American psychology, including its history, methods<br />
and theories <strong>of</strong> intrapersonal, interpersonal and group behavior. Reviews sociological<br />
approaches to social psychology and cultural processes that affect social phenomena.<br />

PSY 3513 PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH METHODS AND STATISTICS 2<br />
(4 credits). Provides in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> correlational and experimental research<br />
design, survey research and laboratory procedures. Introduces analysis <strong>of</strong> between and<br />
repeated design experimental data using analysis <strong>of</strong> variance. Includes a laboratory<br />
component in which students perform all phases <strong>of</strong> a research project. Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 3522 HUMAN COGNITION: THEORY AND APPLICATION (3 credits).<br />
Reviews models, processes and research in information processing; attention, short-<br />
and long-term memory, memory codes, visualization and imagery; forgetting, semantic<br />
organization, problem solving, decision-making, language, multilingualism, music<br />
cognition and cognitive development. Prerequisites: PSY 3012 or PSY 3513.<br />
PSY 3524 SENSATION AND PERCEPTION (3 credits). Reviews models,<br />
processes and empirical research concerning the modalities <strong>of</strong> vision, audition, taste,<br />
smell and touch/feel. Explores how perception gives rise to our subjective experience<br />
and the quality <strong>of</strong> conscious awareness. Prerequisites: PSY 3513.<br />
PSY 3531 CHILD PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews psychological principles,<br />
theories and research pertaining to the developing child from conception through early<br />
adolescence. Includes biological and environmental influences on affective, cognitive,<br />
moral, social and personality development. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />
PSY 3541 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEADERSHIP (3 credits). Examines the research<br />
and application <strong>of</strong> the essential competencies <strong>of</strong> effective leadership such as managing<br />
conflict, facilitating communication and leading groups and teams. (Requirement:<br />
