<strong>The</strong> outside sheet (leaves i, 2, 7, 8) <strong>of</strong> Signature B was set up a<br />

second time, with slight differences in <strong>the</strong> spelling and occasionally in<br />

<strong>the</strong> division into lines. Consequently copies may be found in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First treatise does not agree exactly with that given<br />

above. <strong>The</strong> Advocates' Library in Edinburgh has copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two<br />

varieties.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following extract explains <strong>the</strong> circumstances under which this<br />

first work <strong>of</strong> Napier's was published. <strong>The</strong> passage begins at <strong>the</strong> second<br />

last line in <strong>the</strong> second page <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> address To <strong>the</strong> Godly and Christian<br />
