<strong>The</strong>re are also two plates, <strong>the</strong> one a portrait <strong>of</strong> Napier, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r a view <strong>of</strong> Merchiston<br />

Castle.<br />

<strong>The</strong> collation is from a large-paper copy. Each page is enclosed in<br />

a double red line, <strong>the</strong> title-page being in part printed in red as well as<br />

<strong>the</strong> headings <strong>of</strong> chapters etc., throughout <strong>the</strong> work. Generally, however,<br />

<strong>the</strong> copies are printed entirely in black and are without <strong>the</strong> double<br />

line enclosing <strong>the</strong> type.<br />

In his preface Mark Napier states that he was induced to publish<br />

<strong>the</strong> work " by <strong>the</strong> spirited interposition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bannatyne and Maitland<br />

Clubs <strong>of</strong> Scotland." <strong>The</strong> copies for members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Clubs<br />

are printed entirely in black on <strong>the</strong>ir own water-marked paper, size<br />
