Establish, strengthen and <strong>in</strong>crease access to<br />

health services that adolescents will use<br />

Girls need a range of support, programmes and<br />

services, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g health services. However, services<br />

tailored to adolescents’ specific needs<br />

<strong>in</strong> many areas are limited, even though 78<br />

per cent of the countries surveyed <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />

they are committed to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g access to<br />

comprehensive sexual and reproductive health<br />

services for adolescents—married or unmarried<br />

(UNFPA, 2013e). Even when adolescentfriendly<br />

services are available, adolescents may<br />

not have access to them for reasons <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>convenient locations or open<strong>in</strong>g hours, cost or<br />

the stigma they may experience <strong>in</strong> their communities.<br />

Moreover, adolescents will not use them if<br />

they are treated poorly by providers.<br />

Policymakers committed to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g adolescents’<br />

access to and use of services should ensure<br />

that providers are tra<strong>in</strong>ed to work with young<br />

people, respect confidentiality and offer complete,<br />

evidence-based and accurate <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Adolescent-friendly services should also offer<br />

low-cost or free contraception, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g male<br />

and female condoms, emergency contraception,<br />

and a full range of modern methods, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

long-act<strong>in</strong>g reversible methods, accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

adolescents’ preferences and needs.<br />

Improved service delivery must be coupled<br />

with strong community mobilization and dedicated<br />

outreach so young people know which<br />

services are available to them and how they<br />

can obta<strong>in</strong> them. Voucher schemes can help<br />

disadvantaged adolescents access services that<br />
