A8. Human Rights and HIV<br />

Promoting human rights in the c<strong>on</strong>text of HIV and AIDS means:<br />

encouraging people to respect each other’s rights, and to treat others as they themselves<br />

would wish to be treated.<br />

making sure that educati<strong>on</strong> and health care are available to every<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

educating people to help overcome the fears, ignorance and prejudice that lead them to abuse<br />

the rights of others.<br />

Protecting human rights means:<br />

supporting and defending people whose rights are threatened or abused.<br />

remedying and compensating <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> abuses when they occur.<br />

working to change the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of poverty, powerlessness and dependence that make people<br />

vulnerable to human rights abuse.<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>ally accepted human rights<br />

The human rights of people living with HIV and AIDS are abused in countries all over the world.<br />

The following are human rights, and examples of how those rights are being abused in the c<strong>on</strong>text of<br />

HIV and reproductive health.<br />

Liberty, security and freedom of movement<br />
