Submission summary
Decision
Once again it is better for passengers to walk a short distance and travel on an
express bus.
[submission includes map of suggested route in Te Awamutu township]
Summary:
The demand is there to pay for closing the loop and provided the anticlockwise/clockwise
service is kept efficient and fast by adopting the Mass
Transit approach, with the Park & Ride and Express stops, the ring route will be a
success.
Summary: Re: Hamilton Bus Service Route 20: In the connection particularly
with the Cambridge bus service.
At present it follows the previous route and does not pick up in many of the local
residential areas. If the route ran from Hamilton via Matangi and through the
back of Cambridge East via Zig Zag road, Watkins Road, Taylor or King Street,
crossing Victoria Road, passing down Vogel St, back down Hamilton Road,
through Cambridge Town on the existing route out to Leamington terminating at
the end of Shakespeare Street say at Leamington School. This would cover
nearly all the new estates, the old people’s homes and schools. Unlike at
present, people in the new estates and residential areas without second cars
could get to special events at the schools, unfortunately these at present are not
serviced. Also people would use the service for cross town travel and shopping.
This is a large market at present un-catered for. This could be done without
additional vehicles and very little extra expense.
Suggested different service: At present many people travel to Te Awamutu for
cinema and shopping. I would suggest the Te Awamutu – Hamilton, and the
Cambridge-Hamilton service could be replaced by a circular route: Hamilton -
Matangi - Cambridge – RotoRangi -Te Awamutu – Hamilton, with vehicles
rotating each way. The Te Awamutu – Hamilton leg could be fed through via the
Waikato Hospital making easy access for Te Awamutu and Cambridge residents.
The route would also include access to both Braemar and Southern Cross
Comments noted.
A complete investigation would need to be undertaken to determine the demand,
viability, route taken, cost requirements and funding plan for any re routing or
new service. Such assessments are better carried out with a ‘whole of network’
approach so that an optimised network is achieved. Therefore, Council considers
it prudent to investigate and assess the viability of a Cambridge to Te Awamutu
service as part of the strategic network review stated in actions A6 and A12 of
the WRPTP. The timing for this review to start is 2012/13 financial year.
It needs to be noted that a preliminary costing exercise for a Cambridge-
Hamilton- Te Awamutu service similar to the one described in the submission has
been carried out prior to the introduction of the present services. However it was
decided at the time that there was insufficient evidence from the public
submissions as to the potential usage and the expenditure required would not
warrant such as service.
The WRPTP also notes the challenge of constrained funding and competing
demands and clear indication from NZTA as to capped funding at current levels.
Given this, providing additional services will need to be prioritised on greatest
need at least in the short term.
No change required.
