Section 7.2.7 considers future rail and water transport services.
No change required.
Submitter: 28 Bushell, Rex
Matter: PTP11-28.1
Summary: I submit that a working party be established to secure the Cambridge
rail line reserve for future development and work with town planners of the
council’s involved so that urban growth/expansion is zoned along this line.
Explanation: There will be four employment zones which will be serviced from
this future eastern urban expansion, the future Tainui employment zones: north
of Ruakura, Ruakura, the university and the CBD. It is desirable that urban
design is such that people live close to their work place. This cuts down on traffic
congestion, cuts down on the time people require commuting to work and
enhances people’s life style.
The placement of the urban expansion along the rail corridor will give future
councils the opportunity to develop an urban rail system at a point in time when
the population raises to an economic mass and / or the road congestion is to an
unacceptable level. It is important that this debate is not about the urban rail
system but is about giving councils of the future the opportunity to develop a rail
system. This rail system would have the potential to feed all four employment
zones with the CBD opening up the underground station.
Future Proof, the sub-regional growth strategy for Hamilton City Council, Waikato
District Council and Waipa District Council is the strategy that considers growth
cells in the Future Proof area and where development should occur. This
strategy has been adopted by partner councils and is in the process of being
incorporated into District Plans.
The proposal for passenger rail services has been identified as a key long term
project and the Cambridge rail line is being retained for future use.
Waikato Regional Council will continue to work with Hamilton City Council and
Waipa District Council to ensure that passenger rail services between Cambridge
and Hamilton are recognised in appropriate planning documents.
No change required.
In the short term this eastern urban development would be well served by the
