Description of the Course<br />

This workshop is intended to provide:<br />

• introductory knowledge of the basic principles underlying the most common imaging<br />

methods<br />

• appreciation of potentialities <strong>and</strong> limitations of various neuroimaging methods in<br />

studying human brain functions <strong>and</strong> dysfunctions.<br />

The investigation of human brain anatomy <strong>and</strong> functions using a range of imaging<br />

methods represents the most influential development in <strong>Psychology</strong> in the last years. In<br />

this workshop, essential facts about all major structural <strong>and</strong> brain mapping techniques,<br />

including Positron Emission Tomography (PET) <strong>and</strong> SPECT, structural <strong>and</strong> functional<br />

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) will be reviewed. The focus will be on the<br />

strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses of each of these methods <strong>and</strong> on the description of relevant<br />

applications in the normal <strong>and</strong> pathological brain.<br />

Instructional Approach<br />

Lectures, paper discussion, <strong>and</strong> demonstration visit to the MRI scanner.<br />

Form of Assessment<br />

Written exam with open questions.<br />

Description of the Course<br />

The workshop aims to present Psychopharmacology in a broad sense. The<br />

multidisciplinary nature of psychopharmacology encompasses pharmacology,<br />

molecular biology, genetics, physiological psychology, experimental, clinical <strong>and</strong><br />

cognitive neuropsychology <strong>and</strong> biological psychiatry. The emphasis will be on<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing drug development, drug action, drug research, animal <strong>and</strong> human<br />

pharmacological models of clinical disorders, experimental / clinical trial design <strong>and</strong><br />

the development of biomarkers, real measures <strong>and</strong> surrogate measures of drug efficacy.<br />

The course will focus on major areas in Psychopharmacology such as Addiction,<br />

Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis <strong>and</strong> Cognition. These areas will be illuminated form
