Description of the Course<br />
This seminar familiarizes the student with key concepts <strong>and</strong> controversies in current<br />
research in somatoform disorders, with an emphasis on the cognitive <strong>and</strong> behavioural<br />
mechanisms that play a role in the aetiology <strong>and</strong> maintenance of chronic pain <strong>and</strong><br />
fatigue.<br />

• Biomedical <strong>and</strong> biopsychosocial models of health <strong>and</strong> illness<br />
• Controversies in the assessment of physical complaints<br />
• Common mechanisms of unexplained complaints: a symptom perception approach<br />
• The role of catastrophic misinterpretations of bodily sensations<br />
• The role of attribution, attention, <strong>and</strong> affect<br />
• Coping or acceptance<br />
• Cognitive-behavioural treatments of somatoform disorders<br />
• Self-management strategies
