We honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve the IPHC so
faithfully. We all are obviously standing on the shoulders of others in the past in order to
be where we are today. However, several Bishops had felt their time of service was
complete and had previously announced their intention to leave the office. Therefore,
some degree of change in leadership was inevitable during the 2010 Quadrennial
Conference business sessions.
I felt from the beginning that we would see a minimum of eight and a maximum of 12
new Bishops come into office during this time of transition. The average number would
be 10. We currently have nine new Bishops in place and at least one more to be elected.
That would be at least 10 new Bishops for the coming Quadrennium.
Based upon our total number of USA conferences being 30, it appears that about 30% of
the membership of the Council of Bishops will be new to the office when we meet for the
Fall COB meeting in Oklahoma City. This brings the exciting dimension of youth and
fresh thinking to the Council of Bishops. It also means there will be a need for intentional
training and mentoring to address the learning curve for denominational leadership that
they will obviously encounter. We happily and anxiously anticipate both!
This is another example of the “Convergence Factor” that has been so prominent in my
thinking in recent months. The addition of these new Bishops presents a scenario
conducive to even more positive and expeditious change as the IPHC moves into the
leadership position God has ordained for her in the church-world of the 21 st Century!
