people were keeping precepts and meditating, he talked nonsense and insulted the<br />

teaching of the Buddha. As a result of this he is going to be born deaf.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n Indra asked: “Why is this god going to be born blind?”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Lord Buddha explained thus: “Great King Indra, this god, once when he was a<br />

human being, whenever he saw monks begging for alms or beggars he pretended not to<br />

see them. As a result of that action, he is going to be born blind.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n king Indra paid homage to the Buddha and requested him thus: “<strong>The</strong> Lord<br />

Buddha, Sir, please do teach to enlighten me more!”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Lord Buddha expounded to king Indra in this way: “Great King, there<br />

is a teaching called UBhassavijeyya-sutta which can prevent all sorts of danger in this<br />

world. Great king, take this UBhassavijeyya-sutta, the teaching that is free from danger<br />

and death, for refuge. Any person, who writes, studies, recites, worships day and night,<br />

or preaches it to others, that person is prosperous; lives long like the god SupatiTThitA.<br />

Any goddess, who respectfully follows the teaching of the Lord Buddha, is always<br />

comfortable and happy and prosperous. She is free from all kinds of danger and illness.<br />

Goddesses! Should any person take this teaching of the Lord Buddha for refuge, it is a<br />

good medicine for that person and she is indeed prosperous. Any goddess, who takes<br />

refuge in the Buddha, His teaching and His community of monks, will be indeed<br />

prosperous. <strong>The</strong>re will be no dangers and uncertainty for that person. Goddesses! Take<br />

this teaching, which is called UBhassavijeyya-sutta for your refuge. You will be free<br />

from uncertainty and dangers. Goddess! Any person who offers meals and medicine that<br />

means she offers her life so that she is prosperous and healthy”.<br />

Having listened to the teaching of the Lord Buddha, Indra, king of gods, was<br />

very pleased. He honoured the teaching of the Lord Buddha by offering special fragrant<br />
