gentlemen, listen to the MahA Vesssantara-<strong>jAtaka</strong> which contains one thousand gathAs 31<br />

divided into thirteen sections. Whoever wants to end up the circle of birth and death,<br />

aiming to obtain NibbAna which is freedom of all kinds of suffering, listen to the<br />

teaching which is going to be delivered thus: SatthA vAho nAyako : <strong>The</strong> Buddha, the<br />

leader of beings, when he was residing in the city of Kappilavatthu, at the temple named<br />

Nigrodha, preached the MAhA VJ to a group of monks beginning thus: PhusatI<br />

varavaBBAbheti. SatthA : the Enlightened One, (the Buddha) the teacher of men and<br />

gods, after his Enlightenment, he preached the first sermon (Dhammacakapavattana -<br />

sutta) to the five ascetics (Panccavaggiya) and then He proceeded to the city of RAgaha<br />

to fulfill His promise given to King BinbisAra prior His Buddha-hood. He spent three<br />

months there. After the rain season, the Buddha with ten thousand Arahats led by Ven.<br />

UdAyi went to the city of Kapilavatthu for the first time. TadA SAkya rAjAno : At that<br />

time, the royal family of SAkya people, gathering together to welcome the young prince<br />

Siddhattha who was born to the SAkya family, were preparing a suitable and peaceful<br />

place called Nigrodha for him to stay. <strong>The</strong>n, with many kinds of flowers in their hands,<br />

they welcomed the Buddha in procession. <strong>The</strong>y arranged the children of the subjects to<br />

go first and then young boys and girls, the sons and daughters of ministers the second,<br />

the third came, the ministers and rulers, holding fragrant flowers staying behind to<br />

welcome the Buddha to the Nigrodha temple. BhagavA : the Buddha who has six<br />

miraculous powers with ten thousand arahats went to the Nigrodha temple, which was<br />

offered on that day by the SAkya people. TadA SAkya rAjAno : at that time, the royal<br />

family of SAkya who were proud of their noble births, thought thus: “the young<br />

Siddhattha was our son and nephew and younger than us so we should not pay homage<br />

to him. <strong>The</strong> children would pay homage to him as we are older and we will sit behind”.<br />
