THE UDP VISION -
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
3.1
A key purpose of the UDP is to promote the creation
and maintenance of sustainable communities in
Knowsley. This means pursuing a mixture of
economic, social and environmental objectives. In
defining what needs to be achieved, it is essential to
take into account the views and aspirations of people
who live or work in, or visit Knowsley. The Knowsley
Community Plan states:
“Our vision for Knowsley is to encourage
community well-being by developing an economy
that is vibrant, with a wide range of job
opportunities, where being a citizen is valued and
lifelong learning and education is promoted.
We wish to develop a Borough where the
environment is safe, clean and attractive, where
opportunity, health and social prosperity is
available to all”
DELIVERING THE VISION
3.2
The UDP, as the Council’s land use strategy, must
pick up on the Community Plan aspirations, and
identify objectives that are deliverable through the
planning system. Given the Borough’s past history of
population loss and economic decline, it is inevitable
that regeneration objectives will take a high priority.
This should not be at the expense however of
damaging the Borough’s environmental assets.
The Plan will therefore pursue a balanced approach
that will promote the regeneration of the Borough
whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
3.3
19 strategic objectives have been identified for the
UDP - these are set out below and establish the
strategic direction for the policies that follow in the
rest of the Plan.
